I've helped hand rear lots and have flown a few, it does not get old. Although I must confess I much prefer the look of the eagle owls to the barn owls... Although of course they are equally gorgeous, I guess people have different perceptions.
I might try using owls for falconry Out here in Texas an apprentice can choose any raptor. I'm going to choose a red-tail anyway, and then after a red-tail I want to go to an Aplomado falcon.
Good luck with that, I understand they are super hard to get killing at all consistently... Probably not too much sport to be had with one! The dramatic driven flights with a hawk or falcon will give more sport and I would imagine more enjoyment! An owl would be A LOT of work... Personally I'm planning on flying an owl for pleasure year round and my male harris for hunting! That's when I have the space and time for an owl anyway. I'm hoping to start working as a display falconer next year so should get to fly different birds then and get my owl fix. My male harris is the bird I'll be concentrating on for the considerable future! That's really cool... You'll have a good understanding of both styles of flight then- That of the red and that of the Aplomado! When are you going to go for your license?
After I've talked to my future sponsor (I finally found someone who wouldn't say no). He could help me along with that, and he said that he would take me hunting with his peregrines soon around in the fall (I believe)
AWESOME! My Dad used to hunt peregrines... You're very lucky! I want to fly a tiercel pere in the future but it's a very very long way off... My lure swinging is abysmal. Well, not that bad at all but I could do with some practice before a peregrine comes at me.
